PRESIDENT'S BLOG

G'day Viewers...(to quote an old Paul Hoganism)

Late last week Theresa and I flew north to sunny Hervey Bay in Queensland to attend a Unit Reunion and we had a great time. I heard that the club was rocking on Friday night in anticipation of the Member's cash draw of $400. Antonio Attanasio from Blackwell Funerals was unable to attend as our guest fire lighter due to ill health and we all wish Antonio a speedy recovery - Vice President Shane Edmonds filled the void and did a great job.

The Member's draw saw Aliko Lammersma's name drawn – where were you Aliko? Next Friday’s Cash Jackpot is now up to $500 -WOW! That's the highest it's been! The Saint Meat meat tray was won by John "Slim" Ulseth.

This coming Friday night we have a very special guest, former Lieutenant Colonel Rowan Tink, SAS, who will light the fire. In July 2002 Tink was awarded a Bronze Star by the US Government for his leadership role in eliminating al-Qa'ida networks from their mountain eyries in southeast Afghanistan. Make sure you’re at the club to meet Rowan and say hello.

I'm told that Club Secretary David Kerr mentioned to those present last Friday that our charity of choice is 4Paws K9 Care Packages Supporting Operation K9. This is a locally run charity which supports the joint program provided by the Returned Services League (RSL-SA) and the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB). Operation K9 (OPK9) dogs are provided to Veterans of the Australian Defence Forces (ADF) who have a diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) due to Operational Service. OPK9 places fully trained Assistance Dogs through a comprehensive training course and provides aftercare for the dog’s working life. All initial equipment is provided to veterans by the OPK9 team including a service coat that identifies an OPK9 dog as an accredited assistance dog. RSL-SA approve and support our fund-raising for this cause and we are proud to be part of it.

Looking ahead we have our quarterly General Meeting on Sunday 21st August starting at 1pm and we'd really like to see ALL members attend. These meetings provide an opportunity for the Committee to let you know how our club is progressing but more importantly it gives our members the opportunity to give feedback to the Committee on what can be done to make the Sub-Branch more successful. Please - mark that date in your diary and come along.

One of Adelaide’s premier party bands "@Final Touch"will be playing at the club on Saturday September 10th and if you love a great dance floor, we've got one! So come along and sing and dance with us to your favourite party tunes from 8pm.

We also have an Aussie Movie Marathon coming up on August 27th at the club. Starting at 3pm with cartoons and games followed by 3 classic Aussie Movies. Bring the family for a fun night, $5 donation at the door and kids under 12 Free!

The next quarterly Newsletter is in the works and the Committee is keen to continue to provide you with regular information about improvements being made to the Sub-Branch. Unfortunately, the cost of posting regular hard copy newsletters to all members is very expensive due to the fixed price of stamps, printing and paper. We know that most of you are more than happy to view the Newsletter through electronic means and therefore propose to (a) send an email copy of the Newsletter to all email addresses on our database, (b) post a copy to Facebook, and (c) place a copy on our club webpage. If you receive this email and would prefer to still have a paper copy sent to your address please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. confirming your address details. For members who do not currently have an email address we will continue to provide a paper copy of the Newsletter. Please note that the Newsletter immediately prior to the next AGM will be provided in paper form until preferences have been determined.

We love feedback so please let us know what you want your club to do for you and the veteran community.

Hope to see you on Friday for the $500 member's draw!

Cheers,
Colin, President
