Private Kenneth Whaite McKenzie 6195, a Clerk with the Adelaide Steamship Coy from Military Road, Largs Bay, South Australia, prior to enlistment 29 September 1915 aged 23, he embarked with the Field Ambulance 4, Reinforcement 11 from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A24 Benalla on 1 November 1915
George Fletcher from Semaphore was one of the first from the Port Adelaide area to enlist during World War 1 – at Morphettville Camp on 16 September 1914. He was a stockman, and a Boer War veteran, married to Elsie and aged 44 when he applied to enlist, but he dropped his age by four years to increase his chance of being accepted. He embarked with Headquarters 9th Light Horse Regiment AIF on 11 February 1915, as their Farrier Quartermaster-Sergeant, and served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and later the ANZAC Mounted Division in the defence of the Suez Canal, in southern Palestine and in the Jordan Valley. George returned to Australia in December 1918 with the rank of Warrant Officer Class II. His son Barney served in the same regiment: he died in Palestine in July 1918, aged 22, and was buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery.
(L-Corp) Colin BaylySouth Australian-born Colin Bayly from the South Esplanade, Semaphore was in Liverpool, England on the outbreak of war and joined the 10th (Scottish) Battalion of The King’s (Liverpool Regiment). On the day of Britain's declaration of war against the Central Powers, 4 August 1914, the 1st/10th (Scottish) Battalion mobilised and deployed to Scotland to man the defences on the River Forth.
(Capt) Brian Brock Bayly MC (1884-1917)South Australian-born Brian Bayly from the South Esplanade, Semaphore went to England in 1915 and was granted a commission in the British Army. He served with the 254th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers at Gallipoli and then in France, being wounded-in-action and awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry, before being wounded in Belgium a second time. Brian Bayly died of his wounds in a field hospital on 30 October 1917, aged 32. He was buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery in Poperinghe, Belgium.
(L Cpl) Louis Henry LyallLance Corporal (L Cpl) Louis Henry Lyall 4817, a winchman from Semaphore, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked as a Private (Pte) with the 15th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 9 March 1916 aboard RMS Mongolia for Suez.
Private Cyril Percival Hamilton 15699 a Porter from Semaphore, South Australia, prior to enlistment 23th October 1918, he Trained with B Coy, Base Mitcham A.I.F. Camp, Adelaide, South Australia. Cyril was discharged on 24th December 1918 due to the cessation of hostilities.
Corporal John Joseph Hamilton 168 a Labourer from Robin Street, Kew, Semaphore, South Australia , prior to enlistment 20th August 1914, he embarked with the 10th Battalion, D Company from Adelaide, South Australia, on board Transport HMAT A11 Ascanius on 20 October 1914.
Boy First Class Ronald Rothsay Wright from Semaphore, South Australia. He enlisted on 25 January 1915 at the age of 14 and served aboard HMAT Sydney from 14 January 1916.
Private George Trevitt Thurgarland 2433, a sailor Military Road, Largs Bay, South Australia, prior to enlistment 21 June 1915 aged 28, he embarked with the 27th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 13 October 1915.
