Members of the 5th Pioneers, 10th Reinforcements prior to boarding HMAT Aeneas (A60). Identified are: second row, (sitting on his kitbag, which shows a map of Australia and his service number and smoking a cigarette) 3939 Private (Pte) Carl Tura Hergstrom, of Port Pirie, SA. Pte Hergstrom was born at Sundsvall, Sweden, and was killed in action in France on 3 July 1918 as a member of 48th Battalion. On Pte Hergstrom's left, also sitting on his kitbag is 3865 Pte William Kennedy, a farmer of Streaky Bay, West Coast, SA. Pte Kennedy was born in Balty Bay, County Monaghan, Ireland and was killed in action in France on 3 May 1918 also as a member of 48th Battalion. On the second right, crouching, 3795 Pte (Acting Sergeant) Walter Owen Lewis, engineering surveyor of Semaphore, SA. Behind and slightly right of Pte Lewis is 3944 Pte Edward Sebastian Tonkes, engineer of Ethalton, SA.
