Private William John Martin 774, a Labourer from Hall Street, Semaphore, South Australia, prior to enlistment 11 October  1915 aged 50, he embarked with the Australian Remount Unit 1, Squadron 3 from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A67 Orsova on 12 November 1915.

William John Martin, born 9th January 1865, only surviving son of George Martin and Elizabeth Ann Harvey, married Mary Jane Spain on 12th September 1888 and lived in Hall St. Semaphore.

 

He enlisted on 11th October 1915, age 50 years, and on 8th November 1915 was in the Australian Remount Unit 1, Squadron 3 Rank Trooper 774.

 

He embarked for Egypt on 12th  November 1915, in October 1916 he was attached to Australian Remount Depot at Moascar, then to Heliopolis (near Ciro) and then Ismailia (north east Egypt). Served with unit until 2nd July 1917, with medical discharge. Embarked at Suez on the HMAT Orsova A67 for Australia 10th January 1919.

 

William and Mary had no sons, they had seven Daughters. He died 29th July 1943 at Claughton Rd. Largs Bay and is buried in Cheltenham Cemetery.

 

Their fourth daughter Minnie Emily born 1895, married Reginald Thomas Clement Carter 7th November 1914 at the Martin residence in Water St.
