PRESIDENT'S BLOG
Hi Members,
What a great week it has been at the club again, I have many things to tell you about and lots of photos to show you.
On Friday night the 225th Battalion sent us a Catafalque Party to help with the ode, and what a fantastic job they did, it made for a very special ode ceremony on the night. Thank you also for the plaque presented to the Sub-Branch.
We had two very special guests from RSL State office in attendance - Julia Langrehr, CEO and Corey Starkey, Director of Operations. It was both Julia and Corey’s first visit to our Sub-Branch and it was a wonderful opportunity for our committee, members and guests to meet them. Julia acknowledged and praised our contribution to past and current service personnel, our welfare objectives, the Operation K9 fund raising commitment and the Defence Shed initiative. A special nod was also made to the Diver Derrick Porter project undertaken by member Graham Howard.
The members’ cash draw of $600 was not won by “Ernie Berberstoee” as he wasn’t there to claim his cash! That means there’s $700 up for grabs this Friday night. Remember the draw can be anytime between 18.00hrs and 19.00hrs so it might pay to get there early, you can always have a drink and a meal while you wait to see if your name is drawn. The Saint Meat tray raffle was won by our resident vegetarian Candy Kerr and she generously passed it on to someone else, who really appreciated it.
On Sunday, several of our committee members attended the Largs Bay RSL’s Battle of Long Tan Commemoration event. There were many Vietnam Veterans and representatives from other RSL Sub-Branches who enjoyed a free BBQ and a wonderful afternoon of camaraderie. Peter Cates, Largs Bay President, extended his thanks to everyone from our club that went along to support the event.
We were also very pleased on Sunday, to host social club members from one of our major sponsors, PMB Defence, who enjoyed an afternoon of snooker games, drinks and food catered by Digger’s Rest. It is great to see our sponsors enjoying the club facilities.
This Saturday at 08.00hrs there is a service for Veterans Day at the Le Fevre Baptist church, with a free BBQ breakfast. As I have been asked to give a speech it would be great if you could come along to the service to support me and the veterans.
The BIG EVENT coming up this Sunday 21st August is the ***General Meeting*** which starts at 13.00hrs sharp. The club will be open from 11.00hrs with a carvery roast lunch available for $12 before the meeting starts.
Please mark the General Meeting in your diary, the Committee has lots to report from the past 3 months and we would like your input to plan for the future.
Don’t forget the Aussie Movie Marathon is being held Saturday 27th August with 3 classic Aussie movies showing and lots of fun activities for the kids.
Other events to mark in your diary are the Vinyl Night on 3rd September, then party band “Final Touch” playing on 10th September, which is also a fundraiser for 4Paws OPK9.
Finally, the Sub-Branch quarterly newsletter is coming out this week. If you are a financial member you will receive a copy in the post but also look out for it in your email inbox.
Hope to see you all soon
Colin, President
